In the Power of Six by Pittacus Lore, Marina feels confined by her Capen, Adelina, the woman who is assigned to look after her.  Marina wants to train and fight with the other Numbers but Adelina doesn't want her to because she thinks it's a lost cause.

Marina starts to secretly look for her personal box which contains things which are part of her heritage and things which may help her fight against the Magodorians.  Marina fights with Adelina for keeping her locked up in the orphanage but Adelina strikes her across the face.  Also Marina searches on the computer when she can about Number Four (John) and wants to meet up with him.

Marina tries everything she can to convince Adelina to help her train to fight the Magadorians.  She tries to get into her to help her open her box and support her in her wishes but Adelina refuses to let her leave.
