          In the drummer boy of shiloh is about a young boy named joby who is a drummer boy in the civil war.  He is sitting in his camp one night and is very scared and unconfident about what is going to happen the next day.  The general then came over to him and made him feel confident and much better. 

          When the general first met Joby he told him it was okay to cry.  "You want to cry some more, go on ahead.  I did the same last night".  The fact that the general could relate to Joby was very helpful in making Joby feel better.  I think its good that the general personally admitted that to him because it is a secret that most grown men would never say let alone the general of an army.  

          The general also boost his confidence by telling him that he is the heart of the army.  "You are the heart of the army, think about that."  Telling Joby this makes him feel special and important because he is only a boy.  This makes Joby feel like he matters although he only carries drum sticks and a drum.  The general is basically saying that Joby is just as important as him.
